Welcome to Mrs. Fallon's First Grade Class Website
Welcome to all my little OWLs!
Outstanding Wonderful Learners
Welcome to our class! I am excited about the upcoming school year and the time I will spend with your child. We are going to have a great year together!
Below you will find some helpful information about our class.
Take Home Folder
Each day your child will bring home a folder. This folder will include the following:
Please check your child’s folder every night and have them bring this folder to school every day as it is the best way for us to stay in communication about your child.
Homework will begin the week of August 21st. Homework is due every Monday. This allows the weekend to complete if a night of homework is missed due to extracurricular activities. Students will also have sight word flashcards and math fact flashcards for at home practice. Students are encouraged to read as often as possible at home.
Every day I will fill out a behavior chart that will tell you where your child’s behavior clip was for the day. If students are on green or higher for the entire week then students may choose a prize pass.
Remind is a free communication tool that allows teachers to connect instantly with parents. It will allow me to quickly send you simple messages, reminders, and photos from class. I will be using this free app throughout the school year to send class reminders.
If you choose to participate in the Remind app you may sign up by texting our class code: @geb2a to 81010.
The app is not required for participation.
First Grade Curriculum
Reading: Altoona School has selected to use the Florida Wonders Reading Series. Each week your child will have 3-7 sight words to learn. Please practice these words nightly with your child. Your child will also have a reading comprehension and phonics test every Friday. The skills tested are the skills we cover in class during that week. Your child’s first reading comprehension and phonics test will be on Friday, August 25th. Fluency and accuracy reading tests will begin the second nine weeks and will be tested every week.
Spelling: Students will study spelling words from the Wonders Reading Series that teach a specific phonics skill every week. They will take a test on these words every Friday. Your child’s first spelling test will be Friday, August 25th.
Grammar: In First Grade, there are a lot of grammar concepts being introduced. The students will be assessed in a variety of ways. Some weeks the concept will be assessed through observation in the student’s writing and other weeks there will be a test given.
Math: First Grade will use Saxon Math for math curriculum. The goal is for students to be able to retain their learning, connect it to other concepts, and apply it in problem solving situations. Practice and assessments include concepts from the most recent lessons as well as from earlier in the year, ensuring that students retain all concepts and can make connections between them.
Math tests will be given every Wednesday.
Science & Social Studies:
First Grade will use Scholastic News Weekly to cover the Social Studies and Science Standards. Students will also keep an Interactive Science Notebook throughout the school year as we cover the Science Standards. Grades are not given for science or social Studies in First Grade.
